What Are You Anyways?

Hoy después de tanta búsqueda finalmente encontré el material que necesito para poder transmitirte el post como debe ser: con "contenido". La razón es un video que deseo compartir contigo llamado "What Are you Anyways".

Este es corto animado se ha exhibido en más de 40 festivales internacionales y ganó siete premios incluyendo el premio al Mejor Corto Animado en los premios canadienses de Electronic Arts. Jeff Chiba Stearns, cineasta canadiense de cortos animados, quien dentro de sus más recientes trabajos realizó Good way to say Happy Father's Day, video que te mostré hace unos meses elaborado para Post-it note 3M, es el responsable de este gran trabajo.

Hace unos días estábamos aprendiendo en clase: "Etiquette" y de la diferencia que puede hacer el expresarse de un modo u otro en Norte América y yo añadiría que en cualquier rincón del globo terráqueo.

Cuando hablábamos del mejor modo de hacer preguntas, hablamos de lo "Polite" que son aquí en Canadá, de lo educados y gentiles que son los Japoneses, y de lo "directos" que pueden ser vistos los Rusos o Españoles, cada uno contaba su experiencia.

Además de eso también hablamos de costumbres, religiones, de la influencia de haber nacido con padres de diferente nacionalidad, de la familia y background que cada uno tenía. En Canadá esto es algo que se pregunta con frecuencia y sin ninguna discriminación: "What's your background?", estuvo interesante.

Pero que tiene que ver el trabajo de Chiba Stearns, con la clase?. Tiene que ver porque entre otras cosas el chico es un Hapa que se ha convertido en un portavoz internacional de raza mixta. Sí, escribí: "Hapa". No sabes lo que significa?, don't worry yo tampoco lo sabía. Todos tenemos una historia es cierto, pero la manera en que este chico la cuenta es bastante original, ojalá todos tuvieramos la mágica manera que el tuvo de compartirla.

Sharing My English. Watch Out N°1.

Today I will share with you some of the seccions that I already mentioned in I want to share my English with you

The first "Watch Out" will be about "tell and say"

The verb tell is used with an object:

1. I told my friend a joke / the truth / a story / a lie / the answer.

We use say when we report someone's words:

1. I said, You are late.
2. He said he had missed the bus.

It sounds and seems easy, but many people confused it.

Holidays in Seville

Seville is a wonderful city located in the south of historic Spain. I lived in Spain for 2 years and before I went back to Venezuela, I had heard lots of recommendations about "Seville Spring Fair", so when my mother went to Spain to visit me and see other places; we decided to go to Andalucía.
This event, is an international annual celebration where everybody usually wears the typical flamenco dress, which is famous world wide. The opening is a big party called "La cena del pescaito y alumbrao (it means "The dinner of the little fish and the lighting"). The thing was Sevilla looked unbelievable, really amazing, people is very friendly there.

Although we had visited Sevilla before, we knew that we must watch a bullfighter, so we did. Before that we went to the store to buy some souveners and then went to a restaurant to eat something, but when we were leaving the restaurant, we had a surprise.

There were two guys in the middle of the little road between the bull ring and the restaurant. They looked very nervouses, even more than us.

They asked in a very impolite way for our documents, as though we had done something wrong. My mother was very confused because that is supposed to happen in my country, but not in Spain.

Before we gave them the documents, we asked for their identification. They said they were officers and that we were in big trouble with the law. We got panicked.The law? What had we done?, What was wrong?.

Nowadays, I still don't have any idea what happened, but maybe if we had chosen anotheer city, we would not lived through this frightening experience.

I want to share my English with you

He aprendido en mis clases de inglés un montón de cosas que me gustaría compartir contigo. Desde hace unos 2 meses como cambiamos de teacher también hemos cambiado de libro. Estamos utilizando el libro de Susan Stempleski World Pass Upper-Intermediate. En este libro he conseguido algunas secciones interesantes y que me han servido bastante. Decidí escribir algunas para compartirlas contigo, entonces voy a segmentar la información y voy a publicar un post bastante breve por semana con un poquito de cada una. Las secciones serán:

• Tricky English: Veras del modo más gráfico como una simple preposición o palabra en inglés tiene un significado totalmente distinto.


• Watch Out: Compara el uso de dos palabras que tienen el mismo significado y explica como y cuando usar una u otra.
  
• Real English: Uso y significado de algunas expresiones utilizadas por nativos.
  
• I didn't know that!: Explica el verdadero origen de algunas palabras, la verdad es súper interesante.

Además voy a añadir algunos tips, los cuales llamaré Grammar Tips, que deberás tener en cuenta si quieres escribir algún post en inglés, reflexión o hasta una simple nota.

Comenzaré esta misma semana, y además de colocarla en mi blog voy a utilizar estos hagstag en twitter a través de @beamena. Así que espero que la información te sirva y sea útil. Si te tienes alguna idea o quieres sugerirme algo, déjame tu comentario.

Studying abroad: More than an experience

People are traveling around the world all the time, looking for good experiences for many different reasons. Some people look for studies, others for internship programs and get knowledge about finding work in this market. Other people come here just to spend time having fun. However, your purpose won't be fulfilled nor your expectations met until you live it.
Studying abroad gives you an experience beyond what you really can imagine. I'm now in Toronto; I came here to learn English, and honestly, I've been living in three different countries for the last three years, with people who don't have my same manner and by now I expected this experience would be enough. But the truth is "it is never enough". I mean, each time, I had to admit more and more that what I knew wasn't always enough. In other words, you never finish learning new things. That situation made me think, that being here and learning day to day things, things that I've never tried before, makes me appreciate more the value of things.
The best part of this experience from my point of view is meeting new people every day, and knowing new cultures from many places and their ways of life. It shows you that you're not the only people in this world. All of these things also make you open your mind, gaining a bigger knowledge of everything. That's something that I'm passionate about because it helps me a lot with my area, in fact, to learn and to understand how to fix problems, and how you're going to provide the solution that you clients need. You definetely must know a lot about your market.
Finally, what I recommend to everybody to do is this: try to make the maximum use of your time when you are here. And if you still have not had the opportunity yet, but you really would like to try, go for it because it's really an experience that will be very satisfactory and that will help you in many positive ways, if you so desire.

When I was sixteen

When I was sixteen, I wanted to look as nice as all my friends from the school. Everybody does that because of their need to be "in" and be fashionable. At that time, the "in" thing was to meet people through the internet a trend that has extended until now. I decided to try and I thought as we usually think when we are this age: "If my friends can, I can too".
I was surfing on the internet and met a guy who was called Alberto. Whenever I remember this time I can't stop laughing.
Alberto is from the capital which is two hours by car from my city, so we started to chat, but only that, because of the distance. However, by coincidence, this guy had an uncle in my city so he decideded to visit me.
The funny thing is that Alberto always said good thinks about himself and of course the innocent Beatriz believed all that he said. He was studying to be a doctor, he had a beautiful new sports car and he looked like the perfect guy.
When he arrived, we went to a nightclub with all of my friends and there I was surprised this because guy didn't dance and didn't like anything. It was very boring and made me feel bored too.
The moral of the story was:
"You need to see to believe"

Pensando en un proyecto personal que me tiene la cabeza llena de ideas maravillosas y buscando en youtube mis lecciones de English para practicar listening con acento británico aunque esté en america por razones que explico en mi post "En Canadá pero escuchando British English", descubrí "Simply Zesty". Una agencia basada en Dublín, Irlanda, compuesta por un gran equipo de 9 jóvenes que decidieron unir ideas y pasión para promocionar un negocio en línea con el PR y Social Media dando consejos y compartiendo información sobre cómo hacer crecer tu compañia a través de herramientas online. Todo esto seguido de 3 simples reglas: Find the conversation, Listen to the conversation and Start the conversation.

"Simply Zesty" tiene además de su web, unos frescos episodios en youtube. @LaurenFisher @TomFox y @DuncanBirch comentan y comparten buenos secretos y tips sobre Social Media. Lo más reciente que han hecho es un video con motivo de la apertura de una nueva oficina en el Reino Unido. En este video se muestran las más recientes cifras de la importancia que tienen los medios de comunicación social en el mercado y como las marcas y empresas tratan de abarcar los beneficios comerciales. La investigación estuvo a cargo de The Oxford Research Agency.

Me he reído mucho con este video, es que la cancioncita hasta pegajosa es, de paso comienza como "Let It Be" cosa que de por sí como dicen los Españoles me mola.

En Canadá pero escuchando British English

Es cierto, Canadá tiene más influencia Europea que Americana. A los Canadienses no les gusta que vean su país como parte de los "States" como ellos les llaman. El background de los Canadienses es en su mayoría Europeo y de allí su diferencia en cultura, pensamiento y modo de vida.

El Inglés Canadiense contiene elementos del ingles americano y el ingles británico, además tienen propias expresiones, pero en mi opinión el acento suena más americano que británico, no obstante ellos no ponen resistencia cuando escuchar inglés británico, solo intentan entenderlo sin queja alguna.

Entonces, hablan con acento americano, pero les gusta escuchar el acento británico? No lo sé, la misma pregunta me la hago yo. Me están evaluando cada dos semanas con un Listening tiene acento británico, mi día a día es ingles canadiense e incluso mis profes son canadienses. Yo no tengo problema en escuchar ambos acentos, pero es el dilema está en las expresiones, por ejemplo las "phrasal verbs" de por si no son fáciles, pero es que los british dicen: "I came across my mate" mientras los gringos dice: "I ran into my boddy", entonces el que aprendo aquí en la calle no es el mismo que me evaluan en el Test, esto lo hace todo un poco más complicado, claro que no imposible.

En mi escuela así como otras academias de inglés como segunda lengua la que manda es la Universidad de Cambridge. Ella y sus General English exams.

•FCE (First Certificate in English)
•CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)
•CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
y para Academic and General English exams
•IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

Sin embargo, cuando decides aplicar a la universidad, la prueba que te piden para ser admitido es TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language, marca registrada por Educational Testing Service (ETS), que a su vez, es equivalente al CAE o CPE dependiendo de la calificación que obtengas. Dicen que incluso el TOEFL es mucho más fácil que el CPE, pero tiene mucho más prestigio y reconocimiento. No obstante de todas las opiniones que he leído y escuchado, con la que más me identifico es con la mía: "TOEFL,CPE o lo que sea es solo un papel". Te das cuenta de eso cuando hablas con compañeros que están en un nivel superior al tuyo, pero que no saben como expresarse, mucha gramática pero no dominan realmente el idioma. Sinceramente creo que no es culpa de ellos, sino del sistema de evaluación.
